Description

German infantry assaulting through no-man's land - Cambrai, 1917.

"The Green Fields of France" is also the name of a moving scottish song about a young soldier.

WWI battles consisted on taking the other trench, and it was simple as that. At each assault, thousands of soldiers had to cross the no-man's land, the area that stood between the trenches, in order to reach the enemie's. No man's land was a place filled with craters from days of artillery bombardment (artillery was responsible for more than 60% of the WWI casualties), barbed wire, and thousands of corpses from the previous assaults. The assaulting company had to cross it facing gargantuan artillery barrages from all calibers, and the terrible machine guns, which practically wiped out any attempt of an attack a few meters from where it started. The german sturmtruppen were soldiers specially trained for assaulting positions, armed with several grenades, hand-to-hand weapons of all kinds, and reinforced uniform. But, like the others, they were not bulletproof.
